I’m not a professional welder, but I have a solid background as an engineer. Years ago, I used a basic stick welder for car work, but now, using this 135 amp FCAW (MIG) welder makes tackling thin metal much easier. The machine is compact and lightweight, which I appreciate. I checked the voltage output, and everything looked good. I tested it on a small metal stand for a fan (see the painted picture), and it performed quite well. Now the stand is stable enough to support the fan, so the welder has already covered half its cost by saving us from needing a new fan.
Here’s a tip for working with thin metal sheets under 1 mm: when attempting a spot weld, the wire feed can be too fast, causing burn-throughs. To achieve spot welds, let the wire extend out of the nozzle for a bit, then disengage the wire feeder by pulling the top wheel off the feeder. This way, it won’t feed when you press the gun button, but it will still weld when you touch the workpiece with the hanging wire. If you need more wire, you can re-engage the feed or pull it out manually.
Another approach is to use a piece of wire with the stick welding clamp instead of a welding stick, ensuring it has the correct polarity for MIG. You could also experiment with reversing the polarity.
The welder functions well, and I like that it has a protective cover over the display and controls to guard against sparks. Before storing it, I usually pull the wire back into the machine by hand to avoid wastage and safely disconnect the MIG gun.
The manual is surprisingly good for a budget tool, which isn’t always the case with cheaper equipment. I haven’t yet tried stick or TIG welding, but stick welding should be straightforward as it doesn’t require a feed. I’m unsure if I will use TIG welding since my projects are generally small DIY tasks around the house, like fixing broken legs or frame parts.
Update 9/29/2023: I recently welded a broken frame part of a swing canopy that had been damaged by the wind. I started with spot welding, then switched to MIG flux core with the wire feed. It worked out well, though welding around the screw holes was tricky. The metal is quite thin, just under 1 mm. While using the MIG at around 40 amps, I noticed some metal buildup that I had to grind down. The welds are stable and have penetrated the frame sufficiently.
I haven’t explored higher amp settings above 90 yet, and likely won’t need them since they are suited for thicker materials, like 1/4 inch. I don’t have many items that thick, and they would likely trip my 20 amp breaker. The machine indicates it requires 54 amps for those high settings.
I also tested stick welding with the flux wire clamped in and two wires in parallel, which worked well for spot welding and holding the frame pieces together.
For those considering a welder for small DIY projects, don’t be swayed by higher amp models. They’re pricier and mainly suited for thick materials, which isn’t necessary for smaller jobs. Generally, 100 amps is adequate, and for thin sheet metal, 30-60 amps should suffice. Employing some techniques can help prevent burn-throughs. You can also use a piece of MIG wire to bridge small gaps before welding, making it easier to fuse thicker pieces. It’s straightforward—just melting metal together!
Quick Update 7/12/2024: The welds are still holding strong after nearly a year—no bending or weakness in the swing frame or fan stand.

I’m still testing its versatility; I need to weld more items, but so far it has worked well for me.

Let’s be honest and set some realistic expectations: this is a budget-friendly welder made in China. The packaging, the manual’s language, and the overall finish may not be perfect, considering its long journey to your doorstep.
That said, for the price you pay, this welder is an impressive little machine. It’s compact, lightweight, and packed with features you wouldn’t typically find in this price range. The dual voltage capability makes it versatile for various locations, and its duty cycle is outstanding. With all-metal wire feed components and a large 10 lb spool capacity, this welder is durable and flexible, performing well across a wide range of applications. While it’s not a heavy-duty industrial machine and may struggle with welding thick steel, it’s perfect for hobbyists, autobody professionals, automotive fabricators, and anyone needing light to medium-duty repairs. It’s also a great choice for professional welders looking for something portable without sacrificing quality.
Now, about my personal experience: my welder arrived with a few loose screws, but as a married man, I’ve grown accustomed to that. The setup was fairly straightforward, even though the manual felt more like a spec sheet than a user guide.
My first few beads were a bit shaky, much like the flimsy ground clamp included with the machine. I was trying to find the right settings, and when everything seemed to fall into place, I noticed inconsistencies during longer beads. The metal deposition changed, and I wasn’t getting that satisfying “sizzling bacon” sound I expected; it felt like I was shifting from solid beads to tack stitching mid-weld. I checked my ground, amperage, and ensured the metal was clean, but I was puzzled. Initially, I blamed the machine’s “synergistic” settings for the issue. After hours of troubleshooting, I realized the wire feed motor wasn’t functioning properly.
I reached out to YesWelder support, and they were incredibly attentive, addressing my concerns swiftly. After confirming the issue, I was back up and running in just ONE DAY. All my doubts about this company vanished, and I plan to purchase another welder from them or try out their plasma cutter. While there are cheaper options available, it’s hard to find another welder that offers this level of performance and exceptional customer support at this price point.

I was pleasantly surprised by this welder. Its compact size, lightweight design, and impressive power make it a fantastic option for hobbyists, home mechanics, and light to medium industrial tasks. With over 20 years of MIG welding experience, I found this machine easy to set up and it delivered excellent results. I use it with a 75/25% gas mix and 0.030″ plain steel wire, which produces a smooth bead with minimal spatter and solid penetration.
Keep in mind that using gas requires a regulator/flow control, and Yeswelder offers a good one for around $40 CAD. The MIG gun cable is about 5 feet long, but you can easily address this by using a small welding cart to hold the welder, gas bottle, and accessories. Just roll it up to your work area, plug in, and you’re ready to start.
I highly recommend this welder for any serious professional seeking an economical machine that delivers great results.
